So I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I think most of us Brits are aware that the UK is one of the cloudiest countries in the industrialised world and our weather isn’t all sunshine, happiness and rainbows!!
And just to add to the doom and gloom seven months of the UK’s sun rays are too weak to allow effective vitamin D production.
A draft proposal from the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN), an independent advisory body to the government, made the recommendation after it is said the UK weather prevents the British public from receiving adequate amounts of the essential vitamin from the sunlight.
Sunscreen, pollution, weight, location, skin colour, working indoors are all contributing factors to low vitamin D levels and the Government are now saying this is something we must keep on top of.
I don’t normally agree with many of the Governments recommendations when it come to health – but I’m definitely with them on this one!
So if your not already packing your bags to move to the Tropics here’s the low down on vitamin D – why it’s vital – and how we can top it up….
Vitamin D is best known for it’s essential role in bone health and the way it helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorous, but now research is showing it could be one of the most important vitamins because of its abundance of uses.
Although it is called vitamin D it is actually a pro-hormone and not a vitamin. This is because the body is capable of producing its own vitamin D through the action of sunlight on the skin, while vitamins are nutrients that cannot be synthesised by the body and must be acquired through supplements or food.
Research is now suggesting that vitamin D may also play a role in reducing your risk of heart disease, multiple sclerosis, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, autism, flu and type 1 diabetes.
Humans get around 90% of their vitamin D from sunlight and only 10% comes from our food (oily fish – tofu – mushrooms)
It is estimated that sensible sun exposure on bare skin for 5-10 minutes 2-3 times a week allows the body the ability to produce sufficient vitamin D. I always do it early in the morning or late afternoon.
Unfortunately vitamin D has a half-life of only two weeks so if it’s not being topped up regularly especially in the winter months our stores run low!
So when I’m out of juice in the winter months I always take Viridian Vitamin D 1000iu or Better You Vitamin D oral spray.
♥ Love them or hate them mushrooms are one of the best food sources of vitamin D and you can amp up those levels by exposing them to sunlight! Leaving them to soak up the sun rays you are making a lovely batch of immune boosting vitamin D enriched mushrooms!
♥ The first step of vitamin D production that occurs on your skins surface usually takes about 24 hours to fully absorb after sun exposure. You might be a bit stinky for a while, but if you can refrain from having a shower or using soap allover your body straight after sun exposure you’d be retaining the benefits.
If you have a cool doctor it might be worth asking for a test. I’ve been asking mine for years and he always fobbed me off with some excuse! But on my last hospital visit they actually told me they will be checking my vitamin D levels from now on.
I asked them why….
“Oh is extremely important to stay on top of it.”
