oil pullig

In India, most teachers and gurus have rituals and traditions passed down generation to generation to purify and detoxify the body.

One of these rituals that has been practised in Ayuvedic medicine for thousands of years is Oil Pulling and its one of the most independently researched in Indian medical journals.ayuveda

It is said that your mouth is the mirror of your whole body’s health and there are over 600 different kinds of yeast, fungi and other micro-organisms that reside in the deep dark crevices of your mouth. So if your thinking about a new way to drastically improve your health……. start with your mouth!

Oil pulling is the Ayurvedic remedy used for oral health and detoxification which involves the use of pure vegetable oils as agents for pulling all the harmful bacteria out from the mouth, teeth gums and the throat. The oils acts like a cleanser, pulling out the nasty stuff before it gets a chance to spread throughout the body.

To oil pull effectively try it in the morning on an empty stomach.

Place a tablespoon of cold pressed organic coconut oil in your mouth (you can use sesame or olive oil, I just prefer coconut oil)  and swish it round your mouth, start with 5 minutes then gradually work your way up to 10-15 minutes, if I have more time I go for around 20 minutes,  then spit it out. Give your mouth a good rinse and your done!

Simple but very effective♥

As the oils mix with your saliva  the lipids in the oil will start to pull toxins out of your saliva, and as you continue to swish it through your teeth and round your gums it will keep absorbing toxins. Make sure you don’t swallow any during the process as you will be ingesting the toxins you are trying to get rid of!!

Here are a few more reasons why you should make this part of your morning routine…

♥ The oil possesses natural antibiotic and antiviral properties that brightens and cleans teeth, keeping them sparkly white.

♥ It will help strengthen your teeth, and its a great remedy to help prevent bleeding gums.

♥ Oil pulling will help prevent diseases of the mouth and gums like gingivitis and cavities. Its also good for bad breath.

♥ The Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine highlighted a study that reviewed holistic approaches to oral health and discovered that oil pulling is one of the most effective natural health solutions known to scientists that prevents tooth decay and loss, and praised for curing more than 30 systemic diseases. Wow!

Beyond the mouth…

Ayurveda advises oil pulling to purify the entire system; as it holds that each section of the tongue is connected to a different organ such as the kidneys, lungs, liver, heart small intestines, stomach, colon and spine, similarly to reflexology and Traditional Chinese Medicine.IMG_1095[1]

I find this so exciting because it really highlights how the detoxification effect that oil pulling has on the entire body reaches far beyond oral health!

Other possible effects of oil pulling are…

♥ Reduces the symptoms of allergies

♥ Correcting hormone imbalances

♥ Helps cure hangovers

♥ Helps reduce sinus congestion

♥ Helps detoxify the body of harmful metals

♥ Reducing inflammation and arthritis pain

♥ Helps support normal kidney function

♥ Balance blood sugar and improve energy

♥ Kill candida

Oil pulling may seem a little strange at first seeing as we have all been raised with tooth brushes in our mouths!

But remember….

Our ancestors didn’t brush their teeth with toothpaste for thousands of years and they seemed to do quite well and live to a ripe old age with most of their teeth in good tact according to archaeological evidence! They took care of their teeth by natural means and depending on the culture and region of the world many were believed to have oil pulled.IMG_1091[1]

So it might not quite be a household name yet but “oil pulling” has definitely  had a buzz around it for some time in the natural health world, and its  become an essential part of my health regime. I hope you get on board with this one its definitely a winner.

Have you tried it? Are you thinking of trying it?
