vegetarian weekSo it’s National Vegetarian Week

In recent years the meat thing has become a subject very close to my heart. Factory farming etc saddens me deeply, thats why I usually keep a lid on it.

But seeing as it’s a week to celebrate all things veggie I think it gives me a  bit of a free pass to just chime in a little bit about the way we are consuming meat these days.

I’m not going to rant on as I never judge people on their eating choices.

So in a nutshell…IMG_1158[1]

Be extremely careful and conscious about where you buy your meat from. 85-95% of our meat comes from factory farms. Clever marketing paints a pretty picture, but behind the farm gates is a brutal horror story. Fear-induced, stressed animals pumped with antibiotics and hormones cause several disease processes in humans. Protect yourself, but most of all – protect your children.

For me, giving up meat  IMG_2696was a gradual process, it was something that had always tugged a bit on my heart strings but I had learnt to just disconnect.

But after a few dodgy meals, a few documentaries, some heartfelt conversations..

I finally sat with one eye open and watched Earthlings.

The Philosopher Tom Regan said..

For those who watch Earthlings, the world will never be the same again.

It sealed the deal for me!

Joaquin Phoenix – one of my favourite actors – who beautifully narrated the film has been a vegan since he was an impressive 3 years old! And this week being International Vegetarian Week I have been pleasantly surprised with the celebs flying the Vegetarian /Vegan flag.

Did you know Brad Pitt is a vegan!

alexandra backshellHe is also an ardent animal rights activist. But what surprised me even more is that Angelina and their brood do not follow suit! Apparently he hates red meat and gets annoyed when ever he sees Angelina eating it, and he also gets mad seeing the kids tucking into animal based products!

Maybe it’s not so perfect in their household!!! I wonder if he has a separate fridge and sits alone munching on his quinoa salad!

Here are just a small handful of vegetarian/vegans…

Pink, Ariana Grande, Johnny Depp, Pamela Anderson, Ellen De Generes, Prince, Leona Lewis, JaredIMG_2673 Leto, Bill Clinton, Miley Cyrus, Sia, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson and Leonardo Di Caprio.

Samuel L Jackson said in an interview he went vegan so he could live forever! And Stevie Wonder has just come on board the veggie bus too!

Even the mad dare devil Steve O from Jackass has hung up is crazy pants and become a vegan. He narrated a fantastic video What Came Before, check it out on youtube its So heart warming ♥

♥ Natalie Portman was a vegetarian that went IMG_2689vegan in 2009 after reading Safran Foer’s book Eating animals.

Tough guy Mike Tyson became a vegan in 2010. He said, “I was so congested from drugs and cocaine I could hardly breathe. I had arthritis, high blood pressure and was nearly dying. Once I became a vegan all that stuff diminished “.

♥ Usher has been a vegan since 2012 and apparently  tried to get his protege Justin Bieber aboard the vegan train too, but he didn’t stick with it!!!

It is said that Leonardo Da Vinci was a vegetarian and Albert Einstein became a vegetarian towards the end of his life.

IMG_2664Einstein’s famous quote was..

Nothing will benefit health or increase chances of survival on earth as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.

And finally….

Cutting out meat has monumental health benefits.

Studies are showing  that vegans/vegetarians have lower cancer rates and better prospects for  disease free, long happy life!

So as it’s National Vegetarian Week maybe dig a little deeper into your heartIMG_2668 (1) and think about your meat consumption and how its serving you, your health and the environment.

A compassionate diet does wonders for your digestion!!

Thank you so much for being here ♥

Have a wonderful weekend ♥
