cucumberSummer is fast approaching…hopefully

And the temperature will be slowly rising…hopefully

So this is the time to really start upping your game when it comes to hydration and cucumbers are the perfect food for this as they are made up of 95% water, making them an ideal cooling and hydrating food.

I pretty much use cucumber for the base of most of my juices due to their mild flavour and high water content plus they are loaded with essential minerals and vitamins highly beneficial for your health.

My favourite at the moment is lime, mint and cucumber water which is lovely to prepare at night, leave to infuse and drink the next day. This is a great drink to gently flush out unwanted toxins from the body. You could also replace the lime with lemon.

So what are the 7 reasons why you need to eat  cucumbers…..

♥  Cucumbers are loaded with antioxidants, vitamin C and beta- carotene. They also contain antioxidant flavonoids like quercetin, apigenin, luteolin and kaempferol.  Quercetin is an antioxidant that has been shown to prevent histamine release, making it a natural antihistamine and great for the allergy season. Kaempferol can help fight cancer and lower your risk of heart disease.Cucumber on White

♥  Cucumbers are loaded with fiber and water which are the two most essential elements needed for optimal digestive health. They also help raise the stomach pH, which can assist symptoms of acid reflux.

♥  They contain an assortment of B vitamins including B1, B5 and B7. B vitamins are known to help ease anxiety and reduce the damaging effects of stress. So if you’ve got a dodgy boss or had a long day maybe its time to replace the vino with a lovely glass of cucumber juice!!!!

♥  Keep forgetting where you’ve put your keys! Cucumbers contain an anti -inflammatory flavonal called fistien that has been shown to play a crucial role in promoting brain health. It is known to improve memory and even protect your nerve cells from declining due to aging.

♥  If your breath is a bit stinky ditch the sugary breath fresheners and place a slice of cucumber on the roof of your mouth. This will help rid your mouth of the odour-causing bacteria. According to Ayurveda, eating cucumbers help to release any excess heat in our stomach which is believed to be what causes bad breath.

♥  Cucumber contains silicon and sulphur which helps promote healthy hair growth. The high silica content also helps prevent splitting nails. The high water content plus vitamins A, B and C with the presence of minerals like magnesium and potassium make cucumbers an essential part of skin care. Its as old as the hills but putting cucumber on your eyes really does reduce puffiness! Ascorbic acid and caffeic acid present in cucumber brings down water retention and swelling under the eyes. IMG_1350[1]

♥  If your looking to maintain a healthy weight cucumbers are very low in calories, yet make a very filling snack. The soluble fiber in cucumber dissolves into a gel-like texture in your gut helping to slow down your digestion. This helps you feel fuller longer and is one of the reasons why fiber rich foods may help with weight control.

A little tip……

When it come to buying cucumbers organic really is best. They are always on the dirty dozen list, (check out the Dirty Dozen And Clean Fifteen list for the clean and most contaminated fruit and veg) and are ranked very high as a contaminated food due to their pesticide content. I hope this doesn’t send you running to the hills but is  good to know this stuff!!

Also cucumbers are often waxed after harvest to protect them from lots of handling and their long old journey to the supermarket, so if you can’t get your hands on organic give the cucumber a good wash and peel the skin off.

A few random facts about cucumbers…..

Apparently they originated in India around 3,000 years ago.

They are scientifically known as cucumis staivus and belong to the same botanical family as melons and squashes.

If you want to avoid a hangover after a night out on the razzle, or get over a bad headache, eat a few slices of cucumber before you go to bed. They contain enough B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential lost nutrients in your body and keep everything in equilibrium!

Looking for a green way to clean, take a slice of cucumber and wipe it on any surface that needs a little TLC, it will remove tarnish and built-up residue leaving your sinks and surfaces looking beautifully shiny and clean.

And finally….IMG_1344[1]

Did you know the term “cool as a cucumber” is actually derived from the cucumbers ability to cool the temperature of the blood!

Take action now

Get juicing, infusing and make sure your fridge is stocked up with cucumbers so you can keep that beautiful body super hydrated this summer.
