They have a tremendous nutritional profile
It’s a super seed!
In fact anything derived from hemp is amazing, nourishing and highly beneficial for your body.
It is also refined into products such as oil, wax, resin, rope, cloth, paper and fuel.
Hemp is one of the purest, most complete plants on earth. Its uses are many and varied; of particular value to humans are the nutritional and healing properties of Hemp seed and its oil. Hemp grows almost anywhere and requires no pesticides or fertiliser. The plant is good for both the soil and the earth
Hemp seed has been consumed by mankind and animals for centuries and it is said that whole populations have survived off hemp seed in times of famine.
In China, at the cinema you can still buy roasted hemp seeds in the same way we buy popcorn!
But when the benefits of hemp popped up in some research I was doing recently I thought how have I let this incredible superfood drop off my radar.
So they are back in my pantry now..
I’m back on the hemp……seeds!
If you’ve ever been a bit sceptical about eating hemp seeds, or worried about that random drug test at work
Hemp seeds are produced from the hemp plant, cannabis sativa L.
Hemp is commonly confused with marijuana, as it belongs to the same family but the two plants are quite different.
Hemp has always had a bit of a problem stepping out of the shadow of its naughty cousin marijuana but it contains microscopic amounts of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) – the chemical in marijuana that get you high!
Hemp seeds are a complete protein. They have the most concentrated balance of proteins, essential fats, vitamins and enzymes. Hemp protein is also a complete source of all 20 known amino acids including the 9 essential amino acids which our bodies cannot produce.
They are a more digestible protein than meat, eggs, cheese, human milk, cows milk or any high protein food. They have a better spectrum of available proteins.
The human body needs a 3 or 4:1 balance of omega 6 over omega 3. Hemp seed is the only seed where this ideal balance occurs.
EFAs (essential fatty acids) are involved with producing life’s energy throughout the human body and without them, life is not possible!
The omega-3 fatty acid in hemp reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and may even ward off Alzheimer’s.
The omega-6 fatty acids in hemp stimulate skin and hair growth, maintain bone health, regulate metabolism and help brain function.
